Southampton's Musical Alphabet
Saturday
3rd & Sunday 4th March
Southampton
presents a musical A to Z in 26 hours. Throughout the weekend the city
will come alive as a multitude of sounds from internationally renowned
artists, local professionals, community groups and young people's ensembles
launch one letter in each hour as part of the BBC?s Music Nation weekend.
The Musical
Alphabet includes at least two folk events:
C
for Ceilidh:
From 12 noon to 1 pm on Saturday Jigfoot and caller Pete Gritton present a free
ceilidh in a marquee in Guildhall Square, Southampton SO14 7FP, playing their
inventive arrangements of English folk dance tunes with energy, wit and swing.
F
for Folk Session
runs from 3 pm on Saturday at the Guide Dog , Earls Road, Southampton SO14 6SF.
Musicians from the local Minced Head and English tunes
sessions will meet up to play tunes from all over Europe and the British Isles.
Listen or join in - any acoustic instrument welcome.

for Americana:
One of the first acts on Saturday will be Contraband playing bluegrass and mellow
country sounds at 10 am in West Quay, Southampton SO17 4EG.

for Latin:
On Saturday evening from 9 pm Atlantico will be bringing their authentic
cumbia sounds to La Baronia, 29 Portswood Road, Southampton
SO17 2ET for a night of food, drink and dancing. Early booking recommended if
you want a table to eat delicious Mexican food previous to band playing. Call

Q
for Quartet
is represented by Quattrio, who will be playing baroque chamber
music between 1pm and 2pm on Sunday in the atmospheric surroundings of the Tudor
House Museum . Usual museum entry charges will apply.
